Vegan Leather

Looking in the mirror

When was the last time you took a good look around you? As you are reading this, you are most probably seated on a very comfortable chair looking at a screen made with many intricate parts. But, have you ever wondered what it takes to make these things which you use everyday? Leather is something we all love for its luxurious feel and has become a necessity in almost all of the items we use everyday from bags, to the sofa and footwears. However, this comes at a cost to us.

The Price We Pay

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.29 billion animals were killed in 2018 to supply the leather demand. What's worse is the process to make leather. Large amounts of water and chemicals are used to tan the skin to become leather which are highly toxic and disposed of in our water bodies. This water pollution adversely affects the ecosystem surrounding us and if we do not do anything about it, we may soon need to start fighting for clean water. In an effort to combat this, faux leather was created but it creates even more problems as they are made of plastic. Thankfully, vegan leather comes to the rescue.

Ordinary Vegan Leather

Vegan leather feels and looks just like ordinary leather but much different in the way it is created. Made fully from plants, vegan leather is a sustainable way for us to fully enjoy leather with no regrets. Just like a haircut, farmers will only cut part of the plant to be used for vegan leather and the rest is left to grow therefore there is no deforestation. Soft to the touch, it has a uniquely premium feel to it yet it is built extremely durable much like ordinary leather but with lower maintenance. Highly versatile, vegan leather can be applied to most products acting as a true substitute to ordinary leather. Vegan leather is even versatile enough to be dyed any colour to suit any individual style. It also has a natural aroma which is free of the chemicals used when tanning ordinary leather.

Sustainability is a Priority

At Benithem, we value sustainability at our core and believe vegan leather is the correct way to go. With its numerous benefit at no cost to quality, we want to encourage its use in our community. We want to combat the cruel nature of producing ordinary leather and provide our consumers with a peace of mind knowing that their product was created from a place of love for the environment. Apart from the difference in sourcing the leather, vegan leather is slightly different in its texture as well as its aroma. Vegan leather is significantly softer making it much better to feel and be used in many applications in our life such as chairs or clothing. Vegan leather is slowly making its way into our world and hopefully becomes the new normal.

Green Chair

It's a fact that most people spend a substantial amount of time indoors, be it working or stufying. It is important to maintain a clean and hygienic place in order to be productive, which means good indoor air quality is essential.

"Indoor Ai Quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. Understanding and controlling common pollutants indoors can help reduce your risk of indoor health concerns. Health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later."

stated by U.S Environmental Protection Agency

As of today, one of the most common pollutants indoor is Formaldehyde, found in furniture, plywood, glue and many other products. After a short exposure to Formaldehyde, you may start to experience irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, skin or even headaches and coughing.

Based on National Institute of Cancer on Formaldehyde and Cancer risk, prolonged exposure may result in one to contract respiratory diseases, heart diseases or even possibly risk of cancer. A study performed by the National Institue for Occupational Safety and Health found an association between the duration of exposure to formaldehyde and leukaemia deaths.

We are Greenguard Certified

"GREENGUARD Certification program helps manufacturers create - and help buyers identify and trust interior products and materials that have low chemical emissions, improving the quality of the air in which the products are used." - stated by GreenGuard

In 2011, we have collaborated with GreenGuard Environmental Institute (USA) to develop our seats to meet the proliferating demands of our customers to be satisfactory for the IAQ. We are also the first in Southeast Asia to receive this certification and until today, we have the most complete range of office and lounge seatings certified by GreenGuard of all office seating manufacturers here. From then, we have always obtained raw materials with low emissions of pollutants and used GREENGUARD Gold Certified, SIMALFA®309 (Formaldehyde free), to create our products in order to provide a healthier seat for your lifestyle and not forgetting, to safeguard our workers during production.

"SIMALFA®309 is a very fast drying one-part water based adhesive that can be used in a wide variety of applications where one of the materials is non-porous. SIMALFA®309 is commonly used where foams and other porous materials are bonded to non-porous substrates such as non-woven fabric, metal, wood, or plastic." - stated by SIMALFA®

All in all, we care for our product makers and users, hence we take into consideration your health and comfort, bearing in mind that we must also not forget about our environment.

Green Factory

As defined in the Oxford Dictionary, pollution is the presence in our introduction into the environment of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects. This simply means that there are many substances that are detrimental to our health all around us. For example, the haze that is still prevalent today. Therefore, we have been consistently controlling and improving our efficiency and effectiveness in terms of waste management in compliance with ISO 14001:2004 to reduce many types of pollution.

"ISO 14001:2004 specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organization to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal requirements and other requirements to which the organization subscribes, and information about significant environment aspects. It applies to those environmental aspects that the organization identifies as those which it can control and those which it can influence. It does not itself state specific environmental performance criteria."

stated by International Organization For Standardization on Environmental Management System

We have also adopted the 3Rs, "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" policy, which aims to create 99.9% recyclable and replaceable products. This ensures that we conserve natural resources while minimising any possible wastage. Thus far, we are proud to say that our ZOOM series is now recyclable up to 95% of the body parts.

We understand the paramountcy of keeping our nature intact and also having a secure working environment, hence, one-third of the factory ground is reserved for greenery, to ensure both a balance between our factory and nature, and coexistence with wildlife. We also take into account the wellbeing of our workers, by ensuring their workplace is of impeccable quality. We cherish the ecosystem that exists in our area, hence, we do not exploit the land and tarnish its beauty.
